Winter Horse Care
12.11.09
Since my last post was about winter riding I only thought it fitting to discuss winter horse care. With the temperatures now dropping below freezing we not only need to think about our well being while being exposed to the elements, but our horse(s) as well. But before heading outdoors make sure that you’re ready for the winter chill. The Graylakes Fire District has some quick and easy tips on staying safe in these very cold temperatures http://www.grayslakefire.com/Safety%20Pages/safety_cold_weather.htm.
Just a few short months ago my horses were slick, shiny, and looking great. Now they look like fluffy fur balls. Where did my beautiful horses go? The freezing temperatures, the snow we just received, and possible freezing drizzle on Saturday brings our winter horse care to the fore front. Kristen Weiss, D.V.M. has a good article on winter horse care at http://www.saddleshop.com/sentinel/freeze.htm, and gives some great tips on “Fighting the Freeze”.
Feel free to comment and let me know how you and your horses beat the winter chill.
