The Tale of a Tail
01.19.10
Everyone says that the first step on the road to recovery is to admit when you have a problem… my problem is making sure that my horse Jr has a beautiful tail. Ok there I admit it! The reason is because two years ago his tail got a little short, and I hated the way it looked. Since then I have changed the way I groom Jr’s tail, what products I use, and what I use to protect his tail.
The only time I use a brush on Jr’s tail is for a horse show. Any other time I just run my fingers through his tail. This helps to not have as much breakage as you would using a brush, since horse’s tail are so brittle.
I use a few different products on Jr’s tail to help keep it healthy. Some people say don’t wash a horses tail others say wash a horses tail. I wash Jr’s tail with MTG shampoo, but not often. For me the MTG shampoo rinses very easily and gets the tail clean with less soap as compared to the others I have used. In a spray bottle I mix half water with half Mane and Tail conditioner, add some baby oil, and a dash of Listerine. Shake the spray bottle so as to mix everything together, and then I just spray it on Jr’s tail.
Once I get done grooming Jr’s tail, it gets put in a tail bag. This helps protect it from the elements, plus he isn’t able to step on it and pull his tail out.
These are just a few things that I do to help keep my horse’s tail looking healthy. What are some of your tips?
